'ANIMALS SHARE WITH US THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING A SOUL' ~ Pythagoras

'THE GREATNESS OF A NATION AND ITS MORAL PROGRESS CAN BE JUDGED BY THE WAY ITS ANIMALS ARE TREATED' ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I left the UK and came to live in this beautiful part of Greece with two cats in 2005. Never did I think that animal welfare/rescuing would take over all other planned activities. The plight of these helpless innocent souls is heartbreaking.

Lu - Bo

Lucy (dog) appeared in a field last year.  We don't know where she came from, or whether she has a home.  But one thing we do know and that is she is such a loving, gentle dog, who protects all the other GreekSTRAYS in the field.  She has been sterilized and many times it has been promised that she will go to a new home.  Each time, she is overlooked and the reason is that she is a big dog now.  For us, this is sad, but we love her dearly and hand on heart, if the day came for her to be re-homed, we would be happy, but very sad.  Boubolina (cat) on the other hand, turned up when we were catching strays for neutering purposes.  We only saw her a couple of times in a particular area, when we were feeding, as she wasn't a regular.  At the time, we didn't know how sick she was.  She was skin and bone and naturally could not be neutered.  She needed to go to a home to be looked after.  But like most cases for stray animals, there was no-one who was interested in taking her home to nurse.  We could not put here back in the field in the condition she was in, as she wouldn't have survived.  So we took her home for 2 weeks and nursed her.  She made a full recovery, which was great, because we were able to have her neutered.  After her neutering, we took her to the field where all the other cats were.  Lucy and her have become inseparable.  They love playing together and it is so nice to see her back to normal.

Abandoned puppies

Yesterday my husband was contacted about 6 puppies that had been abandoned on the Bisti peninsula in Ermioni.  Why do certain Greeks continue these terrible practices? Why don't they believe in having their animals sterilized or neutered? It is heartbreaking finding strays in this situation and not being able to help them. Sadly we don't have land to offer, so a couple of telephone numbers were given. It was the same old story, no one available, the local charity full etc.  But what is the local charity full with?  Anyway this morning these 6 little puppies had vanished.  Upon investigation, it was identified that they were rescued and are going to Germany on Wednesday to start their new life.  They are so lucky and we are so pleased.  But the person who rescued them, refused to take the little 2 that were found by a passer by in some bins.  Instead they were euthanized!!!!!! They deserved to live and I cannot forgive or forget.  It is with this, that it is so important for me to raise funds, to buy land and build a shelter for the plight of GreekSTRAYS. Today we learnt that no-one rescued the poor abandoned puppies from the Bisti peninsula. They vanished overnight!!!!  I hope that some kind animal lover found them.  It is unbearable to think otherwise.
