'ANIMALS SHARE WITH US THE PRIVILEGE OF HAVING A SOUL' ~ Pythagoras

'THE GREATNESS OF A NATION AND ITS MORAL PROGRESS CAN BE JUDGED BY THE WAY ITS ANIMALS ARE TREATED' ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I left the UK and came to live in this beautiful part of Greece with two cats in 2005. Never did I think that animal welfare/rescuing would take over all other planned activities. The plight of these helpless innocent souls is heartbreaking.

A happy outcome for little SMUDGE

Rescuing all these kittens, one never knows where it will all lead.  Is it kinder to leave them where they are?  Will they settle if you take them, or will they run away?  With little SMUDGE there wasn't such a dilema. As soon as he was picked up, he just snuggled up and purred his little head off.  Instantly one knew the actions one would take.  Into the car, and not even in a basket.  Day by day, he was fed and got on well with all the other strays, of all sizes and ages.  However, a home has to be found for him.  The adjacent neighbour to this field, is cruel and we have realised this might be the reason we have lost 7 kittens in the space of 6 weeks.  We cannot loose anymore.  We know all the cats in this particular field have to move, but we have to start searching for homes, which will be a mammoth task.

Posting on many social sites, one begins to see how many others are doing exactly the same thing.  So many strays, so many SOS pleas, so many desperate situations.  Why are people so cruel to animals.  Why don't animal lovers in many Mediterranean countries have their pets neutered or sterilized?  OK, some might not agree with this practice, but isn't this a better option, than dumping puppies/kittens into bins, or worse still, poisoning them?  Since we came to live here in Greece, we have solely neutered approximately 400 pussy cats.  Some have vanished, but some are still around.  When you see the condition and how they change, it  is worth all the hard work.

Lucky SMUDGE though is wanted, and this is within Greece. Towards the end of December, he will be going to the island of Skyros to join his new forever loving family, who will care, love and pamper him.  What a delightful ending for little SMUDGE.
